Introduction to the Imperial College London

Imperial College was founded in 1907 from the Royal College of Science, the Royal School of Mines and the City and Guilds College. The three combined expertise in pure science, engineering, mining and related topics such as geology. More recently, a merger with Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School created the Imperial College School of Medicine, the largest medical school in the country.
Imperial College's main strengths are maths, engineering, science, technology and medicine. It also boasts a ￡1.4m interactive TV system that enables medical students to attend lectures and watch demonstrations without travelling across the capital.
The university also has a large agricultural sciences department, based in Kent. The Wye campus is set in a 350-hectare estate in the heart of the countryside, close to the small town of Wye, which has shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants.
Imperial is a place where men outnumber women by two to one, and where some men are prone to terrible blindspots in their choice of pasttime. The sartorial disasters that befall some students when they get a place does not deter applicants from overseas - they made up 30% of full-time first years in 1997/98. All first years are guaranteed accommodation.
Imperial's students' union is no longer part of the NUS, although ICU and ULU cards are accepted across London. The biggest sport here is rowing, and there is a wide range of societies.
Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine was an independent constituent part of the University of London until July 2007 when it was granted a new royal charter declaring it an independent university in its own right.
Imperial College was established in 1907 in London's scientific and cultural heartland in South Kensington, as a merger of the Royal College of Science, the City and Guilds College and the Royal School of Mines. St Mary's Hospital Medical School and the National Heart and Lung Institute merged with the College in 1988 and 1995 respectively.
Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School merged with the College on 1 August 1997 to form, with the existing departments on the St Mary's and Royal Brompton campuses, the Imperial College Faculty of Medicine.
On 1 August 2000 Wye College and the The Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology merged with the College. The Kennedy Institute became a Division of the Faculty of Medicine and Wye College is now known as Imperial College Wye campus.
